Biography:
Upon completing law school at Vanderbilt in 1982, John W. “Jack” Fink came to Little Rock at the suggestion/insistence of his wife, a Little Rock native. Jack says that moving to Little Rock was “a very good decision because I got to stay married and I also got to practice law with my good friends at this law firm, many of whom I have practiced with for over twenty years.”
Jack considers himself “a general practitioner at a fairly high level.” He has extensive experience in a number of areas including, but not limited to, commercial litigation, creditors' rights, real estate (transactions and real estate litigation) and collection law. Recently, Jack’s practice has included (i) defending American Standard in their asbestos litigation in Arkansas (approximately 25 cases), (ii) acting as local counsel for Alltel in defending against 8 purported class actions which seek to prevent the planned sale of Alltel, (iii) defending a lawsuit which alleges construction defects of two 30,000 plus square foot buildings sold to the Arkansas Teachers Retirement System, (iv) in the dissolution of a local law firm and (v) representing an out of state bank in pursuing a fraudulent conveyance action to set aside a conveyance of a large tract of farmland in south Arkansas. According to Jack, his practice “can be stressful, but it is never dull.”
Jack claims that he cannot separate his personal life from his professional life. Nonetheless, he is very successful in both areas. Jack’s family consists of Jane Fink, his wife of almost thirty years; Mary Ryan Fink, his older daughter who graduated from the University of Georgia and is now teaching English in Argentina; and Ann Fink, a graduate of the University of Alabama and an R.N. in Little Rock. The Finks are members of Our Lady of Holy Souls Catholic Church. George and Sam Fink, the Fink family’s black and tan miniature dachshunds, are “the only grandchildren Jane and I have so far.”
Jack’s hobbies include target shooting (“I do not go enough to be any good.”); barbequing (“I do that enough to be pretty good.”) and enjoying an occasional adult beverage (“I am world class by any standard.”).
Jack’s thoughts on the practice of law:
“First, people normally hire lawyers in stressful situations. I try very hard to ease that stress by being calm, easy to talk to and accessible for my clients. My goal is to be the lawyer that a client does not dread having to call. Second, the practice of law is often adversarial in nature, particularly in litigation. A good lawyer should try to minimize the conflict when that can be done without compromising the client’s interest. Lawyers are supposed to resolve-- not escalate-- conflicts.”
“The lawyers at this firm truly do put the clients’ interests above our own, and I am more proud of that than of anything else about our firm.”
